Marie: A mother to six-year-old Mark and four-year-old Katie. Still grieving the tragic loss of a stillborn daughter, she makes a devastating mistake and becomes pregnant by her therapist. Separated from her husband and drowning in guilt, she desperately wants to repair her fractured family and relies on her parents’ support to find her way back to grace.

Joe: Marie’s husband, who emotionally buried himself in his work after the loss of their baby. Initially angry and heartbroken over Marie’s pregnancy, he leaves to live in a studio apartment. After spending time reading his Bible, he is inspired by the biblical Joseph and returns home, choosing to forgive Marie, keep their family together, and raise her new baby, Charlie, as his own.

Grandma & Grandpa (Jim): Marie’s deeply faithful and supportive parents. Grandma is an eternal optimist who encourages Marie to lean on her Bible and trust that God will forgive and restore her marriage. Grandpa is a loving patriarch who anchors the family, reading to the grandchildren and gently guiding them to understand sin and salvation.

Aunt Lucie: Marie’s unmarried younger sister, a self-described “trifecta talent—singer, songwriter, director”. Sarcastic and witty, she brings humor and chaos to the family dynamic. She is the creator of the VHS cartoon musical The 12 Gifts of Christmas, which helps the family view the nativity story through a fresh lens.

Uncle Chris & Aunt Holly: Marie’s younger brother and his wife. Chris is a newly hired assistant pastor who steps up to provide gentle, non-judgmental pastoral support and spiritual guidance to both Joe and Marie during their separation.

Mark (6) & Katie (4): Marie and Joe’s children. Mark is an active boy who loves football and deeply misses his father. Katie is a sweet four-year-old who carries a Cabbage Patch doll and desperately wants her family to be whole again for Christmas.

1984 Characters

untitled-10 — Mary: A joyful teenage Jewish peasant girl from Nazareth. Deeply in love with Joseph and fond of her energetic puppy, Simon, her simple life is upended when an angel announces she will carry the Messiah. Despite her fears and feelings of unworthiness, she embraces God’s impossible plan with unwavering faith.

untitled-3 — Joseph: A hardworking carpenter engaged to Mary. Upon discovering Mary is pregnant, he is initially hurt, angry, and prepared to end their engagement. However, after an angel visits him in a dream to explain the divine nature of the child, Joseph faithfully chooses to trust God, marry Mary, and become the earthly father to Jesus.

Anne (Mary’s Mother): A wise, loving, and fiercely protective mother to Mary. Deeply faithful, she serves as Mary’s spiritual anchor, reminding her of God’s steadfast faithfulness throughout history and encouraging her to trust the Lord’s plan for the unexpected pregnancy. She provides constant, practical support for her daughter, from taking over her chores so she can visit Elizabeth , to packing food for her journeys , and quietly acting as a traditional chaperone during Mary and Joseph’s courtship.

The Three Shepherds: Serving as comic relief in the animated story, these clumsy Temple-shepherds are tasked with guarding the sacrificial sheep. After being terrified by the heavenly host, they are transformed into celebrating rock stars.

Elizabeth & Zachariah: Mary’s older cousin and her husband. Elizabeth experiences her own miracle, becoming pregnant with a son late in life. Zachariah, who doubted the angel’s message in the Temple, temporarily loses his voice and must communicate with Mary and Elizabeth through expressive pantomime.

The Angel (Gabby) & The Prophet: The narrators of Aunt Lucie’s animated cartoon. The Prophet is a serious, traditional storyteller carrying a bag of twelve symbolic gifts. Gabby is a fun-loving, prankster angel who prefers playing hide-and-seek with the kids, bringing a joyful, modern energy to the ancient story.
